Graduate Student Mentoring Workshop
9th Annual Graduate Student Mentoring Workshop
The Graduate Student Mentoring Workshop is an initiative of the Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA) designed to provide a forum for graduate students to present and discuss their ongoing research with senior mentors in environment-behavior design research. The purpose of the workshop is to strengthen and further thesis/dissertation work, as well to support the development of networks for young researchers, both with senior researchers and with other graduate students.
All students engaged in environment-behavior research and/or design at a graduate level are invited to apply to participate.
The 9th annual Graduate Student Mentoring Workshop will take place on Wednesday, May 22, 2019, in Brooklyn, concurrent with the EDRA50 Pre-Conference Intensives. During the day-long workshop each student selected will present their work during a 45-minute time slot which includes 10 minutes presentation of their thesis/dissertation work to date followed by 30-35 minutes of feedback and discussion with mentors.
These extended workshop sessions are intended to provide focused feedback on the specific work of the presenter as well as general direction related to furthering and improving graduate-level work.
Students accepted to present and/or attend the Graduate Student Mentoring Workshop are expected to commit to the full day of the workshop which would then preclude them from attending other Intensives sessions.
All students accepted to participate in the workshop as either presenters or observers are also expected to be registered for the full conference, or else to have a one-day registration for the day of the Intensives.
The number of student presenters is limited to 20 students. However, additional spaces will be available for other students as observers to attend and participate in all workshop sessions, including all plenary and student presentation sessions.

Jan Gehl - Keynote Speaker
Jan Gehl, architect, professor and consultant on urban design, has focused his career on improving the quality of urban life, by reorienting the design of the city towards the pedestrian, public life and cyclists.
Forty years of research at the Royal Danish Academy School of Architecture in Copenhagen have resulted in a number of by now “classic” books. Life Between Buildings (1971) and Cities for the People (2010), now published in more than forty languages, are among the most referenced resources in city planning.
In 2000, Gehl founded with Helle Søholt Gehl Architects with the purpose of applying theories to practical planning. Major improvement projects have been carried out for Copenhagen, Melbourne, Sydney, London, New York and Moscow.
Application Procedure
Students interested in presenting their research during the workshop are requested to submit a short application form by January 21, 2019. Notices of acceptance will be issued by February 18, 2019. Those students wishing to register to attend as an observer can do so during the regular conference registration process.
Signed applications must be submitted to the EDRA Student Representative at studentaffairs@edra.org by the January 21 deadline.
