At its zenith, perhaps in the first half of the first millennium (1 CE to 500 CE), Teotihuacan was the largest city in the Americas, with a population estimated at 125,000 or more, making it at least the sixth-largest city in the world during its epoch. Apart from the pyramids, Teotihuacan is also anthropologically significant for its complex, multi-family residential compounds, the Avenue of the Dead, and its vibrant, well-preserved murals. Additionally, Teotihuacan exported fine obsidian tools found throughout Mesoamerica. Knowledge of the huge ruins of Teotihuacan was never completely lost. After the fall of the city, various squatters lived on the site. During Aztec times, the city was a place of pilgrimage and identified with the myth of Tollan, the place where the sun was created. Today, Teotihuacan is one of the most noted archeological attractions in Mexico. * **Wikipedia site: [Teotihuacan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teotihuacan)** * **Google Maps [location](https://maps.app.goo.gl/JAyQeF1DSqQ53KbM6)** The National Museum of Anthropology has, for over more than five decades, fulfilled its mission to research, preserve, exhibit and disseminate the country’s most important archeological and ethnographic collections. Since its conception, this twentieth century urban architecture icon was not only envisaged as a repository, but also as a space for contemplation of our country’s multiculturally rich indigenous inheritance. Its 22 Rooms and over 45 thousand square meters make it Mexico’s biggest museum and one of the most outstanding worldwide. * **Wikipedia site:** **[National Museum of Anthropology](https://mna.inah.gob.mx/)** * **Google Maps [location](https://maps.app.goo.gl/YpGo1Wo77pmtAG8m6)** In the times of the second viceroy of New Spain, Don Luis de Velasco (1550 - 1564), a pleasure mansion was built on one of the slopes of Chapultepec Hill. In this place the newly arrived viceroys of Spain lodged, while their triumphal entry to the capital of New Spain was organized (remember that at that time Chapultepec was on the outskirts of Mexico City). Over time, the building was abandoned and finally, it was seriously damaged by the explosion of a nearby powder magazine. For this reason, the architects in charge of the reconstruction, by order of Viceroy Matías de Gálvez, suggested the construction of a new palace on the top of the hill. * **Wikipedia site:** **[National Museum of History](https://mnh.inah.gob.mx/home-en)** * **Google Maps [location](https://maps.app.goo.gl/7FWXRkuTqFhprVEy8)** The Zócalo is the common name of the main square in central Mexico City. Prior to the colonial period, it was the main ceremonial center in the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan. The plaza used to be known simply as the "Main Square" or "Arms Square", and today its formal name is Plaza de la Constitución (Constitution Square). It has been a gathering place for Mexicans since Aztec times, having been the site of Mexican ceremonies, and modern religious events. It has received foreign heads of state and is the main venue for both national celebrations and national protests. * **Wikipedia site:** **[The Zocalo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Z%C3%B3calo)** * **UNESCO official site: [UNESCO Zocalo Square](https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/412/)** * **Google Maps [location](https://maps.app.goo.gl/zqNnBG1YP9DBJL1G9)** Paseo de la Reforma is one of those important avenues that has been evolving for decades, at the same pace as the Mexican capital. It was commissioned by Emperor Maximilian of Habsburg in the 1860s. In this important and emblematic avenue there are some of the most important monuments in Mexico. One of them is the Angel of Independence. This is arguably the most representative monument of the capital of Mexico. The history of the Angel, as it is popularly known, dates back to the Porfirian times, It was on September 16, 1910 when the famous work was finally inaugurated by Porfirio Diaz, which was made with the intention of commemorating the centenary of Mexico's Independence. The work was commissioned to a famous Mexican architect of the time, Antonio Rivas Mercado, while the sculptures and low relief were designed by Enrique Alciati, another outstanding architect of the time, but of ltalian origin. * Official website: [Angel of Independence](https://mexicocity.cdmx.gob.mx/venues/el-angel-independencia/) * **Google Maps [location](https://goo.gl/maps/vqwtzXFqXKiyHhg18)** If you’re into folk art, handicrafts and ‘arte popular,’ the Mercado de Artesanías “La Ciudadela” is a dream come true. It’s so massive you couldn’t even hope to cover it all on one visit. * Market Tour website: [La Ciudadela](https://www.thenotsoinnocentsabroad.com/blog/mercado-de-artesanas-la-ciudadela-one-stop-shopping-in-cdmx) * **Google Maps [location](https://g.page/La-Ciudadela-Oficial?share)** Bazaar Sábado was founded in San Ángel (south of Mexico City) in 1960 as the first of its kind. It is a gallery of artisans and designers whose work comes from creativity, knowledge and tradition. Their products are handmade with the highest quality standards, and express a sensitivity that will make your purchase a unique and authentic Mexican experience. * **Official site:** **[Bazaar Sabado](https://www.bazaarsabado.com/en/?SubmitCurrency=1&id_currency=2)** * **Google Maps [location](https://www.google.com/maps/place/El+Bazar+S%C3%A1bado/@19.3449312,-99.19265,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x85d200025546a41f:0xa6607f7f2dd5f91a!8m2!3d19.3449619!4d-99.1926512)** Due to the lagoon characteristics of the area, agriculture based on chinampas was developed, which is a method of territorial expansion through a kind of rafts covered with earth to gain ground to the water. It was an extremely productive form of cultivation since up to three harvests a year could be obtained thanks to the richness of minerals in the soil, the abundance of water, and the good climate of the region. On December 11, 1987, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. * Trajineras official website: [Trajineras](https://trajineras.com/) * **Google Maps [location](https://goo.gl/maps/Vp2AfYRkrKUegFGt7)** Coyoacán stands for: "place of those who have or possess coyotes", from three Nahua voices: coyotl (coyote), hua (possession) and can (place). It is estimated that the first inhabitants of Coyoacan Center are housed around the years 1000 to 600 BC as a small village that shared the tradition of pottery made with clay from the basin of Mexico. In the year 1521, the place witnessed the arrival of the Spaniards and since then it has been an emblematic site in the history of Mexico City and the country. * Official website: [Coyoacan Downtown](https://centrodecoyoacan.mx/) * **Google Maps [location](https://goo.gl/maps/tATmZBHpUnmDACtq8)** Since its foundation, the MAM has played a decisive role in the consolidation and dissemination of a public heritage, mainly by virtue of its exceptional collection that spans a far-reaching temporal arc (from the 1920s to the present) but which, by its very evolutionary configuration, implies a retrospective and at the same time prospective vocation. The Museum of Modern Art is committed to being a public space that offers its visitors an individual and transcendent experience. Its management seeks to go beyond the idea of the museum as a heritage showcase and reinforce its perception as a cultural center that promotes cultural experiences and services. This, through current museological narratives and an active interdisciplinary public program. MAM intends to emphasize the improvement and diversification of its service infrastructure, as well as to contemporize the design and perspective of exhibitions and parallel programs, always in accordance with MAM's mandate and mission. * Official website: [MAM website](https://mam.inba.gob.mx/museum) * **Google Maps [location](https://goo.gl/maps/KJ6rsfVdqsN1LeD56)** The Casa Azul (Blue House) is Frida Kahlo’s private universe. She spent most of her life here, first with her family and, years later, at Diego Rivera’s side. They hosted a fascinating array of luminaries from Mexico and abroad, drawn by the charisma of both artists. Frida and Diego wanted to leave her house as a museum for all Mexicans to enjoy. At her death, the couple’s friend, museographer and poet Carlos Pellicer did the exhibition design. Its administration was assigned to a trust, the Fideicomiso de los Museos Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo, under the central bank, Banco de México, and constituted by Rivera himself in 1957. * Official website: [Frida Kahlo Museum](https://www.museofridakahlo.org.mx/museo/?lang=en) * **Google Maps [location](https://maps.app.goo.gl/QYH4CkrzMe7ZnvPc8)** Always surrounded by women, Diego Rivera admired their power of fertility and female wisdom: in short, he loved them. That attraction is palpable in his native art collection, on display at the Anahuacalli. The “pyramid”-as it is known to many-is a construction of the 20th century inspired by Hispanic architecture, the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, and functionalist aesthetics. It was raised in stone to house the creations of ancient civilizations. * Official website: [Anahuacalli Museum](https://museoanahuacalli.org.mx/en/) * **Google Maps [location](https://maps.app.goo.gl/sBxwVtSFtx346NrJ9)** --- **TRANSPORTATION** Which airport should I choose to reach Mexico City? The “Benito Juárez” International Airport of Mexico City (AICM) is the main airport of the city and operates flights from all the main cities worldwide. We recommend you look for flights arriving at this airport. The “Felipe Ángeles” International Airport (AIFA) was opened in March 2022 and has currently a very limited number of international flights and public transportation connections. We will update the status of the airport on the EDRA homepage. The AICM airport is served by several taxi services, including Yellow Cab, Porto Taxi Ejecutivo, Pro Taxi, Casadey, Confort Unlimited, Nueva Imagen, and Sitio 300. Due to federal regulations, for now, it is not allowed to board taxis hired via internet applications (Uber, Didi, Beat, Cabify, inDriver, and Mi Taxi) inside the airport, however, these services are authorized to take passengers to the airport. **RIDESHARING SERVICES** Are ridesharing options available in Mexico City? * Yes, To learn about ride-sharing options, visit **[this link](https://ride.guru/cities/mexico-city-ciudad-de-mexico-mexico)**. **AIRPORT TAXI SERVICE** Taxi Service to and from Benito Juarez International Airport to UNAM Taxi service must be requested at the air transportation counter when you arrive in Mexico City. The trip between the airport and the hotels located in the south of the city takes about 45-60 minutes. There will be transportation to and from the main hotels to the Main Campus of UNAM (venue of the conference) in the morning and at the end of the session in the afternoon. If you need to arrive by public transportation from your hotel to the Main Campus of UNAM, we suggest you hire a cab through internet applications (Uber, Didi, Beat, Cabify, inDriver, and Mi Taxi) or ask at the hotel reception if they can call a taxi for you. --- **VISA support letters**Will I need a Visa to enter Mexico?
