EDRA55 Juneteenth Keynote WILSON SMITH*Empathy Driven Design* Wednesday, June 19, 2024, 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM Wilson W. Smith III is the Nike Design Intelligence Manager of Creative Outreach. During his 40-year tenure at Nike, Smith worked on projects that run the gamut of the design profession—retail, graphics, architecture, footwear, experience, brand, and apparel—and designed and developed product for some of the greatest athletes in Nike's history, including Michael Jordan, Serena Williams, Andre Agassi, Rodger Federer. In addition, Wilson is a Professor in Product Design at U of O, where his studio focus is Adaptive Design Enabling Athletes with Disabilities. He’s also co-taught Intro to Product Design in the UO Sports Product Management graduate program. Wilson is the recipient of 2018 Ellis F. Lawrence Medal from the College of Design for distinguished alumnus. Graduating in 1980 with an architectural degree from U of O, Wilson initially worked for Skidmore, Owings and Merrill out of Portland. He began his Nike career in 1983, assisting Tinker Hatfield in Corporate Architecture. Transitioning into footwear design, his focus became athlete inspired products in Tennis, Basketball, Cross Training, and Brand Jordan, where he designed Air Jordan XVI & XVII. Black Enterprise Magazine named Wilson one of America’s Top Black Designers. What truly defines Wilson is his incredible passion around coaching, teaching and giving back. Wilson’s commitment to advancing the next generation, and the power of design to positively impact the world has created a presence and legacy that expands beyond his product designs. In 2019, he was honored with the Jan Ernst Matzeliger Award as the first Black designer in the athletic footwear industry, and with Nike’s inaugural Design Achievement Award. For Fall '22, Nike Classics created the “Thank You, Wilson” shoe story of his retro '96 Air More Uptempo. Wilson is also a worship leader at SouthLake Church, West Linn, Oregon. EDRA55 Thursday Keynote 1 FARSHID MOUSSAVI*Housing as a Sustainable Common*Thursday, June 20, 2024, 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM Farshid Moussavi is an architect, founder of Farshid Moussavi Architecture and Professor in Practice of Architecture at Harvard University Graduate School of Design. She was previously co-founder of Foreign Office Architects (FOA). Educated at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, University College London and Dundee University, Moussavi has a longstanding involvement with academic institutions worldwide. She was head of the Institute of Architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and has held teaching posts at the Architectural Association in London, the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam, the Hoger Architectuur Instituut Sint-Lucas in Gent, and in the United States at Harvard, UCLA, Princeton and Columbia University. Moussavi has served on key design and architectural advisory panels and international design juries including for the British Council, the Mayor of London’s “Design for London” advisory group, the London Development Agency, the RIBA Gold and Presidential Medals and the Stirling Prize for Architecture. She has previously served as a trustee of the Whitechapel Gallery in London and the London Architecture Foundation, and a member of the Steering Committee of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. Currently, she is a trustee of the Norman Foster Foundation London and New Architecture Writers (NAW) which focuses on black and minority ethnic emerging writers who are under-represented across design journalism and curation. She is also one of the London Mayor's 42 Design Advocates. Moussavi was elected a Royal Academician in 2015 and Professor of Architecture at the RA Schools in 2017. In 2018, she was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to architecture. She has published three books, ‘The Function of Ornament’, ‘The Function of Form’and ‘The Function of Style’, based on her research and teaching at Harvard. Her fourth and most recent book is titled Architecture and Micropolitics, Four Buildings 2011-2022, Farshid Moussavi Architecture (2022). EDRA55 Thursday Keynote 2 TATIANA BILBAO*Architecture as a Collective Act*Thursday, June 20, 2024, 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM Tatiana Bilbao began her eponymous studio in 2004 with the aim of integrating social values, collaboration and sensitive design approaches to architectural work. The work of the office intersects with research allowing to design for diverse circumstances and in reconstruction or crisis scenarios. Prior to founding her firm, Bilbao was an Advisor in the Ministry of Development and Housing of the Government of the Federal District of Mexico City, during this period she was part of the General Development Directorate of the Advisory Council for Urban Development in the City. Bilbao holds a recurring teaching position at Yale University School of Architecture and has taught at Harvard University GSD, Columbia University GSAPP, Rice University, University of Andrés Bello in Chile, and Peter Behrens School of Arts at HS Dusseldorf in Germany. Her work has been published in The New York Times, A + U, Domus, Arquitectura Viva, El Croquis, El País, among others. Also, Bilbao has been recognized with the Kunstpreis Berlin in 2012, was named in 2010 as an Emerging Voice by the Architecture League of New York, the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture Prize by the LOCUS Foundation in 2014, the Marcus Prize Award 2019, Tau Sigma Delta Gold Medal of 2020, The Honorary Fellow of The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) in 2021, Richard Neutra Award, the AW Architect in 2022 and most recetly The Miller Prize in 2023. EDRA55 Friday Keynote BILL LEDDY*Empathic Design: Celebrating the Rich Diversity of the Human Condition*Friday, June 21, 2024, 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM William Leddy, FAIA, is a Founding Principal of San Francisco-based LEDDY MAYTUM STACY Architects (LMSA), the 2017 recipient of the national American Institute of Architects Firm Award. For over three decades he has been a national leader in the design of environments that promote inclusion and social justice while advancing urgent climate action. LMSA has received over 175 regional, national and international design awards and has been recognized by numerous organizations including the American Institute of Architects, the French Institute of Architects, the Norwegian Association of Architects, the U.S. Department of Energy, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the National Building Museum. LMSA is one of only two firms in the nation to have received twelve or more national AIA Committee on the Environment Top Ten Green Project awards – the Institute’s most prestigious recognition of integrated design excellence. Leddy has lectured widely and served as visiting professor at the Southern California Institute of Architecture and the California College of the Arts, as the Howard A. Friedman Visiting Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and the Pietro Belluschi Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Oregon. Leddy is also a long-time advocate for expanding our shared values of design excellence to embrace the intersection of inclusion, diversity, and rapid decarbonization in the built environment. His 2010 design for the Ed Roberts Campus in Berkeley, California - an international center for the Disabled Rights Movement - is widely recognized as a landmark of advanced Universal Design at a civic scale. As 2013 Chair of the national AIA Committee on the Environment Advisory Group, Leddy initiated the national AIA COTE Top Ten for Students competition to help prepare young designers to address a rapidly changing climate. From 2019 to 2023, Leddy served as the AIA California Vice President of Climate Action, working to accelerate the decarbonization of the built environment in California and beyond. Under his leadership, California passed first-in-the-nation legislation requiring continuing education in zero net carbon design for architecture licensure, as well as the first state-wide embodied carbon emissions building code. LMSA’s new book - “Practice with Purpose: A Guide to Mission Driven Design” - was published in 2023. EDRA55 Saturday Keynote JOHNPAUL JONES*A Conversation with the Land / I don't believe in Magic*Saturday, June 22, 2024, 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM Johnpaul Jones has a distinguished 52-year career as an architect and founding partner of Jones & Jones. Earning his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Oregon in 1967, his design philosophy emerged from his Choctaw-Cherokee ancestors, which connects his work to the natural world, animal world, spirit world, and human world. Mr. Jones’ designs have won widespread acclaim for their reverence for the earth, for paying deep respect to regional Indigenous architectural traditions and native landscapes, and for heightening understanding of Indigenous People and their diverse Native cultures of America. Johnpaul has led the design of numerous cultural centers and museums with tribes spanning the North American continent, culminating in his 12-year engagement as overall lead design consultant for the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian on the Mall in Washington, D.C. A Fellow in the American Institute of Architects, his designs have won a stream of local and national awards. His awards include the 2005 Distinguished Service Award from the University of Oregon (his alma mater), the AIA Seattle Medal (2006), the Executive Excellence Award from the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (2006), the Pietro Belluschi Distinguished Professorship from the University of Oregon (2011), the Island Treasure Award from the Bainbridge Island Art and Humanities Council (2013), the Washington State Governor’s Heritage Award (2014), and the National Humanities Medal from the National Endowment for the Humanities (2014) conferred by President Barack Obama. EDRA55 Friday Plenary HENRY SANOFF*The Roots of EDRA: A Conversation with Henry Sanoff*Friday, June 21, 2024, 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM Henry Sanoff, Professor Emeritus of Architecture, North Carolina State University, has six decades of research, professional practice experience and community organization, He is widely published and known for his many books— including, Democratic Design, Participation in School Planning, School Building Assessment Methods, Programming and Participation in Architectural Design; Community Participation Methods in Design and Planning, Creating Environments for Young Children, School Design, Integrating Programming, Evaluation and Participation in Design, Visual Research Methods in Design, and Methods of Architectural Programming. He was the USA editor of the Journal of Design Studies, and in 1969 the founder of the Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA). Professor Sanoff has been a visiting lecturer at more than 85 institutions and a visiting scholar at The University of London, Oxford Polytechnic, Royal College of Art, Monterrey Technical Institute, Tokyo University, Western Australia Institute of Technology, University of Sydney, University of Melbourne, University of Wellington, Royal Danish Academy of Art, University of Thessaloniki, University of Hamburg, Seoul National University, Yonsei University, Misr University (Egypt), Qatar University, Kuwait University and Warsaw and Lodz Universities. He received the NCSU, Holladay Medal of Excellence, Phi Kappa Phi Faculty Achievement Award, Sigma Iota Rho award for Distinguished International Service, ACSA Architecture Distinguished Professor, ACSA Community Design Award, Distinguished Fulbright Award, and Fulbright Senior Specialists Award, Professor Sanoff also received awards from Progressive Architecture Design Awards Program, a Design Award and a Post Occupancy Evaluation Award from the School Construction News, the Design Share Awards; the EDRA Career and Service Awards and 2002 ARCC award for Distinguished Leadership in Architectural Research. He was recently honored with a Chair Professorship of Architectural Design at Woxsen University at Hyderabad, India. |
