EDRA is pleased to announce the 2017 Student Grant Program!

Now on its third year, one student receives a $2,000 Environmental Design Research Grant and a complimentary registration to an EDRA Annual Conference*.

2016 applications are due by end-of-day Tuesday, October 18, 2016.

To apply: Applicants must be registered as EDRA student members, prepare a proposal submission and upload to the online submission site by Tuesday, October 18, 2016 deadline. Only single authorship proposals are accepted. Please read the guidelines below carefully as they will be strictly enforced. Applications should include the following in a single electronic document (PDF or Word):

Student generated research is integral to EDRA’s mission of advancing and disseminating environmental design research that improves our understanding of the interrelationships between people and their environments and facilitates the creation of environments responsive to human needs. EDRA’s Student Grants are designed to support and foster the next generation of environmental educators, researchers and practitioners.


1.Title page, project information, name and credentials, and approval signatures

Submit letter(s) of support from the faculty advisor and the program administrator (or Dean/Ph.D Coordinator). All letter(s) providing support must clearly indicate likelihood of the student’s ability to complete the proposed research and dissemination. It is acceptable to submit only one letter of support as long as both faculty advisor and program administrator (or Dean/Ph.D Coordinator) sign the letter. Two separate signatures are needed.

2. Approval Signatures

Submit letter(s0 of support from the proposed project's faculty advisor and the program administrator. All letter(s) providing support must clearly indicate likelihood of the student's ability to complete the proposed research and disseminiation. It is acceptable to submit only one letter of support as long as both faculty advisor and program administrator sign the letter.

3. Abstract (250 words maximum)

Submit a brief abstract describing the proposed project, including objective, methodology, and anticipated results.

4. Project Description (6-page limit)

Your proposal will be reviewed by a selection committee comprised of EDRA academic and practitioner members from diverse environmental design disciplines. The description of your project should aim for clarity and readability, enabling your reader to fully enabling your readers to fully comprehend its intent and originality. Avoid jargon and acronyms where possible. To aid in the review process. To aid in the review process, the following sections should be clearly delineated in your Project Description:

Significance of the issue/problem/focus or context.

Relevance to EDRA and environmental design research/scholarship.

Intellectual Merit: Provide a context for the work being proposed, i.e., by describing your research/inquiry relative to activities conducted previously by you or others, as well as by others elsewhere today. Include the research question/ problem definition.

Research Design and Approach: Describe the research methodology (qualitative, quantitative, mixed) and provide relevant details of the work to be performed (e.g., procedures, productions, protocols, experiments, studies, observation, information and data collection, surveys, analyses, performances, practices, exhibitions) in a manner that will be useful for assessing overall likelihood for success. Speak clearly to the innovation of the inquiry, and delineate novel and original approach. Provide a timeline for the project (major milestones or decision points). Projects that are part of a larger research agenda should address in all parts of the proposal what is specifically presented for EDRA’s funding consideration.

Outcome and Impact on the Field of Scholarship and on EDRA: Explain how the project and selected compelling research design will lead to a significant outcome and successful project result. Clearly describe the project’s expected outcome(s). In addition, indicate how a successful outcome to the project will advance the field of scholarship, such as by adding to the knowledge base, developing new methodologies, or performing or displaying new works. Note that an outcome (e.g., publication of a book) is different from an impact (e.g., the book is expected to be used by certain organizations to broaden understanding of a particular subject). Where appropriate, highlight the originality of the outcome(s) and/or the significance of the impact.

Impact on Investigator’s Scholarship: Describe the relationship of the project to the investigator’s scholarly program. Is the project a culmination or a component of ongoing work? Does the project provide the foundation to move scholarship in a new direction? Will the project generate results that will be published in the peer-reviewed literature or used to make the investigator more competitive for external funding?

Qualifications and Collaborative History of the Investigator(s): If the applicant is working in collaboration with another investigator(s), demonstrate that the investigator(s) is/are qualified to perform the work, that the applicant’s role is clearly outlined, and if appropriate, that a successful history of collaboration exists, especially for projects involving personnel at other institutions. Note: this section should supplement, not replace, the two-page CV and should highlight those accomplishments that enhance the project’s likelihood of success.

Rationale for Funding Request: Explain why funding is being sought from the Environmental Design Research Association compared to other available sources, and whether one or more proposals for the same or similar purpose have been submitted elsewhere.

4. Bibliographic References: (relevant bibliography, citations used; no page limit). Provide complete references for all work cited in the Project Description.

5. Budget and Budget Justification: (2 pages maximum)
Include an itemized budget with a compelling narrative for how funds will be spent and why they are needed. Especially important is a direct linkage between budget items and the project narrative. The support can be used for any legitimate purpose associated with the project if justified in the proposal. This includes but is not limited to travel, instrumentation, etc. Please note that proposals must be approved for submission by the applicant’s faculty advisor, and the chair/director of his or her department.

6. Plan for dissemination:
Relate a thoughtful plan to disseminate the study, its findings, and outcomes at EDRA and other relevant scholarly venues. Successful applicants must submit their work at the next EDRA conference and plan to have paper publication of the research, acknowledging EDRA’s financial support in both.


2016 - 2017 Timeline

  • Submissions are due on Tuesday, October 18, 2016.
  • Application Review takes place in mid-October - late November.
  • Applicants will be notified by late November so that student grant awardee:
    • has ample opportunity for conducting the research and proceed with writing
    • submits a report of expenditure and evaluation of plan submitted/carried out (a month after the work conducted under the award has concluded)
    • can determine potential attendance at the next EDRA conference (EDRA48Madison) and submit their conference proposal by the due date in March, or have a year for research endeavors and attend the EDRA conference the following year (EDRA49) to disseminate research findings; in either case the awardee receives one complimentary conference registration in connection with the proposed research.
  • EDRA reserves the right to withhold or delay awards in a particular year.


  • Submission should follow formatting guidelines similar to those required by other granting agencies to allow students the opportunity to get exposure to and practice the grant-writing process.
